FAQs

What is the difference between “Ecological” hunting and Traditional hunting?

1

Our hunting practice is guided by very similar principles to those of traditional hunters. We want the land to be healthy, and the herd to be happy. In order to achieve that, we follow a few simple rules:

  • Harvest more does than bucks

  • Use copper bullets - no lead

  • Fill all the tags we have

Current New York State laws are built on the North American Conservation Model of the 1930s, with restrictions that were necessary at the time, but are putting our forests in peril now. Listen to a great podcast about this here.

Is Forest Defense a non-profit?

2

While we plan to pursue non-profit status in the future, Forest Defense is fiscally sponsored by Bard College. Fiscal sponsorship is a way for a non-501(c)3 to be able to receive tax-deductible donations through an established non-profit, and opens up opportunities for us to apply for grant funding.

Why: We specifically partnered with Bard because they own nearly 1,000 acres along the Hudson River and are actively interested in helping manage deer population. Additionally, we believe their involvement will help open doors with other landowners in the area who historically haven't opened their land to hunters.

How: While we are Bard's fiscal grantee, Forest Defense is an independent organization. The college provides administrative help when it comes to donations.

Forest Defense is the umbrella organization. The Ecological Hunting Alliance is a project of Forest Defense.
